Temporary
Tips and Tricks
Rinse with Warm Salt
Water
Gently rinse your mouth with a mixture of warm water and salt. This can help reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort. Avoid using hot or cold water, as extreme temperatures can exacerbate pain.
Use Over-the Counter Pain Relief
Taking over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce swelling. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package and consult with a pharmacist or doctor if you have any questions about the right medication for your situation.
Use a cold compress
for relief.
If you're experiencing swelling or throbbing pain, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the affected area. This can help numb the pain and reduce swelling. Wrap ice or a cold pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with your skin, and apply it for 15-20 minutes at a time.

General Soreness
After a dental appointment, it's common to experience some general soreness in your mouth. This discomfort typically lasts a few days and will gradually fade. To manage the soreness, try sticking to a soft diet that won't put extra pressure on your teeth and gums. Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol can also help alleviate the discomfort during this initial period.
For relief from irritated gums or sore spots, rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Simply mix one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water and rinse vigorously to help soothe the area. If the soreness is more severe, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can provide relief. Avoid using Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), or Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn, Anaprox) frequently, as they may not be as effective for this type of pain and could potentially interfere with healing.
Additionally, if your lips, cheeks, or tongue feel irritated as they adjust to any new dental work, using a protective barrier like orthodontic wax can help reduce irritation and provide comfort.
